Textile Talks

Textile Talks features weekly presentations and panel discussions from the International Quilt Museum, the Modern Quilt Guild, Quilt Alliance, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, Studio Art Quilt Associates, and Surface Design Association. The programs are held online at 2 pm. Eastern (11 am Pacific) each Wednesday. Preregistration is required and recordings are available.

In 1998 the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian opened a landmark exhibition called To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions which provided an overview of over 200 years of quiltmaking by indigenous artists in America. Two individuals involved in that exhibition and related publication will present a brief introduction to Native quilting history, show examples of work by artists today, and show how the Quilt Index can be a tool for locating more information on Native quilts and their makers.

Presenters:

Marsha MacDowell, Ph.D. is Professor and Curator of Folk Arts and Quilt Studies, Michigan State University Museum and Director of The Quilt Index. She has authored numerous publications on quilt history. Margaret Wood is a quilt artist and clothing designer.  She of Navajo and Oklahoma Seminole Indian descent and that is reflected in her artwork.  She is an active volunteer with American Indian organizations in Arizona.
