Textile Talks

Textile Talks features weekly presentations and panel discussions from the International Quilt Museum, the Modern Quilt Guild, Quilt Alliance, San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, Studio Art Quilt Associates, and Surface Design Association. The programs are held online at 2 pm. Eastern (11 am Pacific) each Wednesday. Preregistration is required and recordings are available.

Name an illness, medical condition, or disease and you will find quiltmaking associated with it. From Alzheimer's to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Lou Gehrig's Disease to Crigler-Najjar Syndrome, and for nearly every form of cancer, millions of quilts have been made in support of personal well-being, health education, patient advocacy, memorialization of victims, and fundraising. Drawing on stories and images in the book Quilts and Health, some from the collections of the Michigan State University Museum, and more included in The Quilt Index (www.quiltindex.org), this session will explore many aspects of the intersection of quilts and health, including in the time of COVID.

Presenters:
This session will be presented by Marsha MacDowell, Ph.D., Beth Donaldson, and Clare Luz, Ph.D., co-authors of Quilts and Health (Indiana University Press, 2017). MacDowell is Professor and Curator of Folk Arts and Quilts, Michigan State University Museum, and Director of The Quilt Index. She has authored numerous publications on quilt history. Donaldson has been a quiltmaker for over 40 years, has authored 4 publications on quilting, and is the Associate Director of the Quilt Index. Luz is an Associate Professor in the College of Osteopathic Medicine, Michigan State University, and Director of both AgeAlive and IMPART Alliance. Her research has focused on the direct care workforce, and the intersection of the arts, aging, and wellbeing.
